Why Are Router Tables So Expensive?

Why Are Router Tables So Expensive?

Let’s be real—router tables can be ridiculously overpriced. That’s exactly what led me to figure out how to build a solid, functional setup for as little as $3.88 (but you shouldn’t…).

The Dirt-Cheap Setup

I started with a basic router table made from OSB. It technically worked, but the limitations were obvious. Still, I loved how simple it was to put together. It was a fun challenge and a great reminder that you don’t always need high-end gear to get something done.

But if you’re planning on doing real work, I don’t recommend stopping there.

Affordable Upgrades for a Trim Router

Once I realized that the ultra-budget version wouldn’t cut it for serious projects, I started focusing on ways to upgrade a trim router without spending a fortune. Over the years, I’ve tested a bunch of small changes and clever add-ons that really stretch what a trim router can do.

That’s when I started developing a more versatile router base system—something I’ve been working on for over two years now. This thing adds features no other trim router setup has, especially for folks like me with limited shop space and a limited budget.

Horizontal Surface Syndrome (HSS) Is Real

If you’ve ever added a horizontal surface to your shop, you already know what I’m talking about—clutter magnet. I’ve battled this issue more times than I can count. That’s why I design my router setups to either tuck away or serve double-duty. No more wasted space.

Real-World Solutions That Work

From jig construction using double-sided tape to cutting aluminum and brass on woodworking tools, I’ve found that a lot of the best shop hacks come from just trying stuff out. You don’t need fancy gear—just smart techniques and the right mindset.

My goal has always been to make woodworking accessible, especially for those of us trying to stay on budget. Whether it's throwing together a temporary router table or building out a full-featured router base, there are always ways to make it work smarter.

Final Thoughts

I used to wonder why router tables cost so much. Now I know—it’s not the materials, it’s the marketing. You can build something functional, upgrade it over time, and skip the overpriced commercial setups.

And if you’re looking for a solid foundation to start with, I’ve put together a router base system I’m proud of—packed with features I wish I had years ago. Give it a shot, and see how far a smart design can take you.
